About The Financial Education Dad

Hi, I'm the writer behind The Financial Education Dad.

Like a lot of people, I never really received any financial education growing up — no lessons on saving, spending, credit, or investing, at home or at school. I learned most of it the hard way, through trial and error, well into adulthood. When I became a parent, one question kept coming back to me: does my child also have to learn about money only through expensive mistakes?

That question is what started this blog — a place where I share what I'm learning as I try to teach my own child about money, one everyday lesson at a time.

What This Blog Is About

The Financial Education Dad is a practical, step-by-step guide for parents who want to raise financially confident kids. Instead of abstract theory, each article walks through real conversations, simple family activities, and everyday examples that make money concepts click for kids at different ages. The series currently covers:

  • The basics of money habits — patience, choices, and telling needs apart from wants, starting from toddlerhood
  • Allowance and first spending decisions — how much, how often, and what to do when it's all spent in one day
  • Earning, saving, and banking — first earnings, goal-based saving, opening a first bank account, and understanding interest
  • Digital money — cash vs. cards, online shopping, in-game purchases, and advertising
  • Bigger financial concepts, explained simply — taxes, credit and trust, how banks make money, loans and debt, insurance, and the basics of investing

Each article builds on the ones before it, so the series works as a full curriculum for parents — from a five-year-old's first allowance conversation to a teenager's first questions about credit and investing.

What This Blog Is Not

This isn't a blog about get-rich-quick schemes, stock tips, or side hustles. I'm not a financial advisor, and nothing here should be taken as professional financial advice. It's a parent's honest attempt to figure out how to raise a financially healthy kid, and to share what actually works in everyday conversations at home.

Why I Write This

I don't have every answer, and I'm still learning alongside my own child. Every article here comes from a real question that came up in our house — a moment at the grocery store, an allowance running out too fast, a "why can't we just use the card?" — and the conversation or activity we tried in response.

If you're a parent wrestling with the same questions, I hope something here helps.
